In 2013 the Trustees of the New Castle Common realized they could be doing more with their open spaces than mowing and reached out to ForeSite to help them transition three locations, totaling ~7 acres, from mowed lawn to meadow. All meadows were within the Old New Castle limits and given their proximity they are surprisingly different, each with their own unique responses to seeding. It has been several years of varied responses with lush blooms of annuals, rock hard soil, and a slow transition from invasive to natives. Along the way ForeSite has implemented soil restoration, lythrum beetle inspections, and engaged community members in identifying ecosystem establishing native plants.
