Riverview Park Living Shoreline

Working for the City of Seaford, ForeSite prepared construction drawings for a living shoreline in Riverview Park, along the banks of the tidally influenced, commercial waterway, the Nanticoke River. The existing rip rap armored bank was failing and the shoreline eroding. The implemented design included native shoreline vegetation, a boardwalk, and a rip rap breakwater to mitigate the unnatural wave action present at the site due to the commercial waterway and adjacent recreational boat ramp.

The site dynamics were very unusual with the regular barge traffic in the area along with a very beautiful natural marsh habitat across the river; both created a unique habitat for wildlife with egrets and seagulls waiting in the marsh for the tugboats to churn up fish as they maneuvered the barges into place.

The existing plant community in the marsh was surveyed and inventoried as a reference site for the proposed shoreline restoration.

Concept Plan.

The tugboat routine across the river is quite known by the local avian community, the seagulls and herrings fly about catching the fish stirred up by the tug boats. They often wait on the banks of the project site.
