Battery Park

New Castle, DE

Battery Park is a well-loved park in Old New Castle. The small town is rich in colonial history, including our client the Trustees of the New Castle Common. This organization has been in existence since 1764, yes you read that correctly, before the USA was ever the USA! This organization is responsible for preserving and protecting the common lands within New Castle. In 2014 we were asked to prepare a master plan to better define the park gateways and accessibility connections. The project is being completed in phases as funds become available.

Prior to implementing any portions of the Gateway MP plan the park drainage needed to be updated; some of the pipe network throughout the park still responded to the old rail line, creating ponded areas and unfavorable drainage patterns within the park.
An update to the new system included outfall coverings to respond to tide flux; this minimal adaptation to the old system helps to increase pipe capacity, thus reducing flooding in extreme storm events.
Also included ahead of the MP Gateway plan is the inclusion of a new parking lot. The lot will service many people but was specifically designed for clear accessible access to the park as the Gateway MP gets implemented.

The parking lot design included streetscape details to complement the existing colonial setting. Clay brick and granite entry details mimic the existing sidewalk character and masonry clay brick piers with wrought iron sections frame the lot and provide a linear character along the site’s frontage.

The next phase in the Gateway MP is the re-interpretation of this rail line into a walking path, the primary path to connect the multiple gateway points along Delaware Street.
