Governor’s Park and Independence Playground

The first project to be implemented from the Stormwater Master Plan prepared by ForeSite was the area for Governor’s Park and Independence Playground. The design featured a constructed wetland to treat run-off from a future park and a bioswale to treat approximately 3 acres of upstream impervious area. In keeping with our design philosophy, we looked to challenge the benefits of the stormwater feature and designed a tidally connected fish pond between the constructed wetland and it’s outfall to Broad Creek.

Shortly after construction Pontederia and Juncus came on strong; great to see the tidal marsh plant almost back where it belongs, darn rip rap!

Upper constructed wetland for future playground; SHW was less than a foot below the surface, constructed wetland or restoration practice!

With minimal maintenance 2 years after construction the native plants are pushing back; the Hibiscus had flowered for the season but the Eryngium was hanging on beautifully.

Its officially a habitat! Disturbed a snake hanging out by the weir between the constructed wetland and fish pond.

Despite its aesthetics this bioswale is the workhorse of the project, removing pollutants from 3 acres of upstream impervious before it reaches Broad Creek. Don’t the pretty flowers get all the attention!
